MHCA names 2015 Mariucci Award winners

Chiodo, Benson selected as top coaches for 2014-15 season.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association has named its 2015 section coach of the year recipients along with the John Mariucci Award winners as the state coach of the year.

The Mariucci Award winner for Class AA is Wade Chiodo of Bemidji. It is the first Mariucci Award for Chiodo, who has taken the Lumberjacks to the state tournament for the first time since 1986.

The Class A head coach of the year is Spring Lake Park’s Tom Benson, also a first-time recipient of the award. In his 22nd year with the Panthers, he has brought Spring Lake Park to its first state boys hockey tournament.

Assistant coach of the year awards went to Jon Foucault of St. Michael-Albertville in Class AA and Bill McClellan  of Minnehaha Academy in Class A.

This year’s academic state champions are Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and Delano, both of which posted team culative grade point averages of 3.73, in Class A and Moorhead, with a team GPA of 3.81, in Class AA.
